  • ANSWERS

1. My beagle will get all the nutrients that he or she needs from commercial dog food.

FALSE

Don’t assume that your beagle is getting the nutrients they need from prepackaged, dry dog food products. Your beagle has very specific nutritional requirements and food full of preservatives and fillers just doesn’t meet them.

Fresh, homemade food is the best you can feed your beagle. Beagles get their nutrients from freshly killed preys, fruit, grass, insects, roots and berries in the wild.

If you want to go on buying commercial food, you should at least go for high quality food (they have fillers and preservatives, too but in lesser quantities) and supplement it with the nutrients and vitamins that your beagle needs. 2. Feeding my beagle is not like feeding my child. A high degree of variety in my beagle’s diet is not a priority.

True

Your highest priority is to provide a well-balanced diet that provides all the nutrients and vitamins that your beagle needs. Variety does not rank so high on the scales of priorities.

3. I should avoid giving my beagle all of these: cat food, food with bones, food from my table and snacks between meals.

TRUE

  • Commercial food is bad enough; cat food is not going to cut it for your dog.
  • Bones can get stuck in your beagle’s throat or pierce their stomach and intestines.
  • If you give your beagle food from your table you are only asking for trouble and creating the habit of begging for food.
  • Beagles tend to get overweight and this has a lot of negative consequences for their health. Avoid snacks between meals.

4. My beagle needs 3 to 4 meals a day.

FALSE

If your beagle is an adult dog, they don’t need 3 to 4 daily meals. In fact, the recommended amount goes from 3/4 to one cup and a half divided into two meals, depending on your beagle’s age, size and level of physical activity.

Set a schedule for your beagle. If you just put a bowl of food and leave it full, your beagle will get fat very quickly because beagles eat everything that you give them.

5. Any treats are OK for my beagle.

FALSE

Best Beagle Food6. There is something wrong in this picture

TRUE

Dairy is not good for your beagle.

7. I can feed my beagle any fruits and vegetables. They are all healthy and full of vitamins.

FALSE

Although your beagle can benefit from vegetables and fruits, not all fruits and vegetables will do. Avoid gassy vegetables and use whole, fibrous foods. Apples are excellent, for example.
